Betty Bennett was born in Cuba to her Russian-Jewish civil engineer father and her Cuban-Catholic mother. The family left Cuba and moved to Whitestone Queens, New York where she was raised in the industry. With all the different heritages and religions, Betty views life in a unique and distinct way.
Her mother, Isela Bennett, was one of the first Latin-Americans in the IATSE Local 161, representing Script Supervisors. From the age of five, Betty visited multiple sets with her mother and watched and learned from the best professionals in the industry, which made her feel at home on film sets at a very young age and gave her first-hand insight into her chosen career path. With her mother’s guidance and many others, she learned the politics, skills, and tones needed to be masterful on set. Betty was captivated by the enormously inspirational geniuses as indie director Roger Corman (The Pope of Pop Cinema) and Director of Photography Gerald Hirschfeld (Young Frankenstein). With these on-set experiences, she had a priceless education and first-hand knowledge of what is needed to create and be a part of a film. Betty views a movie set as a jigsaw puzzle with unique pieces that must and should fit together to create and complete the big picture.
Betty has been in several commercials from just being at the right place at the right time, which was a great lesson to learn in being seen, being noticed, and taking notice. Her first taste as a script supervisor was at the age of 15, making her one of the youngest script supervisors in the industry. Her mother told her to study editing because a great script supervisor knows what an editor needs. Betty studied as an assistant editor for several years before returning to her passion for script supervising, at which time she became a member of Local 161 IATSE in New York. During this time, she was doing independent films and commercials and got a call to join the set of Miami Vice. John Nicolella, the producer of Miami Vice, loved working with her, and she returned for four seasons. Betty learned the many challenges of working on a fast-paced series on the set of Miami Vice and developed ways to navigate the road of the many personalities that encompass the movie industry.
She has had the honor of working with directors Leon Ichaso, Don Johnson, Rob Cohen, Abel Ferrara, Edward James Olmos, Tim Zinnemann, Bill Duke, Tom Shadyac, Robert Mandel, Paul Michael Glaser, and many more. Some of the many actors she has had the privilege to work with include Dwayne Johnson, Alfred Molina, Celia Cruz, Jim Carrey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Luis Guzman, Cheryl Hines, Pam Grier, Kristen Bell, Alan Cumming, Channing Tatum, Alexander Ludwig, Bette Midler, Billy Crystal, and Kevin James to name a few.
These experiences have created a career of lasting relationships and respect within the industry for her consistency, devotion, trustworthiness, and capabilities. She continued with a career in films in the United States, until being asked to do a TV series in Canada. She became a dual US/Canadian citizen and a member of the Canadian IATSE Local 891 and lived in Canada for twelve years. Eventually, her parents needed more help at home in Miami, so without a thought, she moved back to be a caretaker for her parents.
While back in Miami, she continued working as a member of IATSE Local 161 and continued with feature films like The Substitute, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Perez Family, and Two Much. She worked on several films with producer/director Andy Fickman like The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain, You Again, Parental Guidance, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.
Betty has worked with many first-time directors and various TV series such as Burn Notice, The L Word, Sins of the City, and From Earth to the Moon. With decades of experience working on thousands of commercials and films as a Script Supervisor, Betty is now ready to write and direct her own scripts and tell her stories her way. Betty is kicking off her move into writing and directing with her first movie that she shot in just 19 days, leveraging all her experience, knowledge, and patience.
