At the start of 2017, I got in touch with my many friends in the biz and asked for their help to make my dream come true. My friends with so much experience, not a one hesitated to help. Having everything in place and with cast and crew locked. Carlos and I took a well-needed break and left for a trip to Colorado to get married once again. It was a lovely and simple ceremony. Life was good. We left at the beginning of Sept 2017.
Our wedding was on Sept 7, 2017, and we heard on that very day a hurricane watch for Irma was in place. Knowing we cannot stop a hurricane, we continued on our scheduled 2nd honeymoon. Now the interesting part is what was the name of my mom’s best friend for over 50 years? Yup, you guessed it, Irma.
Hurricane Irma hits south Florida on Sept. 10, 2017. Now realize we have been in our home in Miami Springs since 1970. My grandpa, my parents, me, my daughter, and my granddaughter have lived in this home and never had a hurricane damage a thing. We felt confident that all would be fine.
We returned to find that our garden was gone. With 90% of the movie being shot in the yard, we were taken aback. We had to shut it all down. We lost the cast and crew because of the schedule changes and had to regroup.
I was no longer going to delay. I looked at my husband and said you asked me what I wanted when you retired. I stated I wanted to make my story into a movie and you said, let’s do it. So I looked at my husband and said I will do it all. I will do it by myself if I have to. I am not going to let this delay us any longer. So we basically started all over again.
Then on Dec. 1, 2017, my mom passed away. I shut down again. My body, mind, and soul were in pain. I was hurting. At the beginning of 2018, I started up again. I made this movie with 10 crew members.
Monday thru Friday I prepped everything. Carlos my husband got an extensive honey-do list of making, building and painting, and more. All were marked, and call sheets were sent out on Monday afternoon so the cast could study for the week. The weekend we shot and kept it to 8 hours a day. 19 days later shooting was complete.
Post-production started in late 2018 and with the many layers needed patience is required. With lots of hurry and wait, common for our biz. Suddenly as we approached the end a new nemesis arrived and shut us all down again. March 15, 2020 Covid-19 shut down. Again we wait and finally, the end arrived with much patience, experience, love, compassion, and miracles along the way, 3 projects were completed.
I have come a long way from the little girl who could not read at all cause of dyslexia. I was not going to let dyslexia and all the drama and trauma in my life be used as an excuse to not move forward. So enjoy the ride of “Soils of Evil” cause it might get rough, yet how boring life would be without a few bumps.
